"Dear Friends at Heartland Hospice,
I would like to thank everyone who sent cards, flowers, gifts of food, their thoughts and prayers in Ron’s passing.
I would also like to thank Heartland Hospice for the outstanding care they provided Ron and the loving support they provided me. My deepest appreciation to his nurse Viki Long, RN, and Certified Nursing Assistant, Tafoya Evans. Tafoya provided kind and gentle care, and did so with the utmost attention to Ron’s dignity. She never left our home without saying “is there anything else I can do for you?” Viki’s clinical expertise provided me the comfort and confidence that I needed in providing Ron’s care. The multiple times I would call, she was always there for me. If she didn’t know the answer, she followed up immediately.
Because of Heartland Hospice, Ron’s last two months were some of his better days surrounded by family, 100% pain free and he was able to play cards with his great grandchildren and sit on the front porch bird-watching with no more trips to the Emergency Room! Ron had been sick with limited mobility for many years. Between all the doctor visits, multiple hospital trips, physical therapy, extensive testing, etc. he genuinely felt like he was a full-time patient.
I watched my husband of 59 years go through the motions of life with no quality of life. Each visit our physician would say “well I’ll see you in a few months” and the cycle would start all over. This rollercoaster certainly took its toll not only on my husband but also on me, as I was the primary caregiver/driver.
On Thursday, June 1st, Ron and I played cards in the afternoon as usual, had dinner with the family and he went to bed early that night. The next morning Ron was moving a little slower and since Viki was due for her regular visit anyway I planned to mention it. Our granddaughter (also an RN) stopped in to see if we wanted to go running around with her and I told her we were waiting on our Hospice nurse. After Viki completed her assessment, she and our granddaughter assisted Ron to the bathroom and back to bed when Ron was called home. No drama, no gasping. He passed so peacefully and we were not alone. I am so indebted to Viki and Heartland Hospice for the beautiful way they prepared Ron and I for his last breath. I miss him dearly but I know he is free of congestive heart failure, lung cancer and Type II diabetes just to name a few.
If you have a loved one with multiple health issues, don’t wait for the doctor to mention hospice. YOU need to bring it up for the sake of everyone involved, especially your loved one!"
From one who knows!
