Heartland Hospice Supports Patients Whenever Life Presents the Most Significant Challenges

There is a common misconception that hospice is not available at night or on the weekends. At Heartland Hospice, our care teams strive to support our patients and their family members whenever life presents the most significant challenges. When you need care, we’re ready to provide it. Any day of the year, any time of the day, we can initiate hospice care for you or your loved one. The Administrator at Heartland Hospice serving Raleigh-Durham details several occasions when her hospice team provided care to patients throughout the weekend.

 “One Friday afternoon, I received a call from a retired nurse whose husband had cancer.  She wanted her husband to receive the hospice benefit, but did not want to start the process until Monday after the weekend had passed.  I spoke with her at great length and explained that we are here at any time. I told her if she had any questions or if any issues were to arise, to please call me and we would help her.  At 7 a.m. on Saturday morning, I received a phone call from her saying her husband was unresponsive.  I could tell she was panicked, so I called the nurse on call who headed out immediately while I called their physician. The patient was admitted to hospice smoothly and kept comfortable. He ended up passing away Sunday night.  His wife was so appreciative for the fast and immediate response. She stated that she never expected the support she received and wished she had known about hospice care sooner.”

“Late one Saturday night, I received a call from a caregiver of one of our previous patients. She was in the ER with her 60-year-old mother. Her mother was declining and wanted to be at home. The nurse on call met the family in the ER, arranged for transportation and was able to get the caregiver’s mother to her home.  She passed away at 6 a.m. the next morning, but her wish to be at home was granted and the family is forever grateful!”

“One Sunday afternoon, we received a call from a patient’s family who wanted to take their sister home.  She had been in the hospital for three weeks and had a new diagnosis of cancer that was un-treatable.   All she wanted was to be at home in her own bed.  Other hospices had been contacted, but they weren’t able to provide service at the remote location where the patient lived.  We worked to get all of the necessary equipment to the home and the patient was later discharged from the hospital.  When she arrived home, our team was waiting for her.  They helped the family get her into bed and get her comfortable.  The patient passed away a few hours later.  This family could not thank us enough for how responsive and helpful we were.”
