Every year at Heartland Hospice Serving North Central Illinois and Southern Wisconsin, the staff comes together in an effort to make the holiday season special for several families during a difficult period in their lives. In one of the families, a 10-year-old girl had been helping her grandmother care for her grandfather as he was passing. With the family’s financial struggles, the staff decided to give this little girl her very own Christmas. Staff members pulled together their resources to purchase gifts and decorate the facility. Hospice Nurse Case Manager, Lindsay Wilson, caretaker for the grandfather, dressed as an elf named Chippy and Spiritual Care Coordinator, Joe Militello, dressed as Santa to deliver her gifts.
“It is such an amazing feeling to work for a company that not only allows us, but encourages us during these acts of kindness. This was one of the most memorable days in my five years of employment with Heartland,” said Lindsay.
The patient’s funeral was held a day prior to the Christmas event and turned out to be perfect timing. Heartland Hospice Rockford delivered a “Heartland Moment” to directly impact this family during their first holiday without their patriarch which left them smiling and laughing.
